How we research robot mowers
Choosing a robot mower is a bigger commitment than most lawn care purchases — it's an investment that's supposed to run in your yard for years. Here's exactly how we put our information together.
What we do (and don't do)
We are an information and comparison resource, not a testing lab. We don't buy every mower on the market and run it through our own backyard trials. What we do is research, verify, and organizethe information that's already out there — from manufacturers, owners, and independent reviewers — so you don't have to dig through fifteen browser tabs to make a decision.
If a specific article includes hands-on impressions, we'll say so clearly. Otherwise, assume our content is built from the sources below.
Where our information comes from
- Manufacturer documentation
- Technical specs — cutting width, slope rating, battery capacity, navigation type (wire-guided, RTK-GPS, vision-based), app features — are pulled directly from official spec sheets, user manuals, and manufacturer websites. We link to the source so you can verify anything yourself.
- Owner feedback
- We track recurring themes from real owners across Reddit (r/RobotMowers and related communities), Amazon and retailer reviews, and manufacturer support forums. We're looking for patterns — recurring complaints about a specific model's boundary detection, for instance — not cherry-picked one-off article-comments.
- Independent testing and reviews
- Where third parties like Consumer Reports, established lawn care publications, or YouTube reviewers with a track record of hands-on testing have published results, we reference their findings and link back to the original source. We don't present their testing as our own.
- Industry and regulatory context
- For things like safety standards, RTK-GPS accuracy claims, or regional regulations (e.g., mower noise ordinances), we reference manufacturer certifications and publicly available industry standards.
How we decide what to recommend
When an article ranks or compares mowers, the ranking is based on a consistent set of criteria, not gut feeling:
- Terrain fit — Maximum slope rating, obstacle handling, and lawn size supported.
- Navigation and setup — Wire-guided vs. RTK-GPS vs. camera-based, and how much setup effort each requires.
- App and smart features — Scheduling, mapping, multi-zone support, geofencing.
- Reliability signals — How consistently a model shows up with the same complaints or praise across independent sources.
- Price-to-feature value — Not just sticker price, but what you get for it.
Any article with a “best for X” claim will state the criteria it used, right in the piece — not buried on a separate page.
Keeping things current
Robot mower technology moves fast, especially in the RTK-GPS and mapping space. Every article shows a last updated date, and we revisit our top picks and specs at least twice a year — more often when a manufacturer releases a major update or a new model line launches.
